The World Economic Forum recently published its Africa Competitiveness Report 2009. The resources-rich continent's top innovators turn out to be Kenya, South Africa - and Tunisia. In fact Tunisia came out top of the list of all African countries graded for competitiveness.
Good governance is a necessarily strong characteristic of a successful nation, and Tunisia scored particularly strongly in their institutional capacity, putting them on par with nations such as the US, Chile and the Republic of Korea. In fact in most assessed categories Tunisia came near or at the top – for instance they came second for transport infrastructure.
Rapid growth in Tunisia has not been without its critics. Amnesty International wrote in a report published as recently as June 18th
“Tunisia’s ‘economic miracle’ has not benefited all, nor has it been matched by greater enjoyment of human rights.”
However the report also conceded
“In recent decades, economic development and government efforts to eradicate poverty have been accompanied by improved living standards for many Tunisians. According to the UN Development Programme (UNDP), Tunisia has made substantial progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals”
I don’t know about you but I always imagined Tunisia to be a sleepy country with a lazy dependency on tourism, but from reading this report one gets an impression of a well-run dynamic modernising country rapidly catching up with the First World.
David Redfern, founder and Managing Director of DSR Asset Management the overseas property specialist says “Tunisia – Africa’s northern-most country is easily accessible from Europe’s capital cities and boasts a wealth of attractions for its visitors including sunny climate, glorious white sandy beaches, clear turquoise sea, and diverse landscapes and culture.”
DSR Asset Management have a new project in Tunisia called The Dunes, located on the exclusive ‘gold coast’ in what has been dubbed as Tunisia’s Puerto Banus – Port El Kantaoui.
The development is in a prime residential area surrounded by golf courses, a marina, a private resident’s beach and also hosts world class spa facilities.
The 5 star resort is only 30 minutes from the existing International airport. But of course in dynamic Tunisia anticipation is the mother of success, and second airport is due to be completed in 2009.
