News Detail

The way that the Reserve Bank of Australia dealt with the country's housing market has been held up as a model for others to follow. During the world economic slowdown in 2002 the Central Bank avoided cyclical “Boom and Bust” by strategically talking down the housing market and refusing to slash interest rates.

This effectively set the scene for the Australian economy to ride out the current recession far better than most countries. Economist at Macquarie Brian Redican said. "Other countries are looking at the Australian example as a very positive one and there are some lessons to be learnt from that episode.” Martin Foster, Risk Analyst at DSR Asset Management, confirmed that the positive way the Australian government handled the recent economic slowdown has resulted in investor confidence remaining high. “We are experiencing record levels of enquiries for our Australian investment properties” said Foster.

“Investors are looking for economies that have a comparative advantage in times of economic turmoil. The policies adopted by Australia’s government are encouraging those looking to buy international property, as the country offers a more stable market.” In June 2009 there was a 1.1 per cent increase in the level of demand for housing finance in Australia. DSR saw enquiries reach record levels if a property is located close to attractions, amenities and transport links then a healthy demand and supply imbalance will be in place – good news for those thinking of purchasing properties.”
