MUCH of the action in Berlin is in the neighbourhoods of East Berlin. So it comes as a surprise that one of the most happening parts of town is Kreuzberg, which for many years was a part only of neglected West Berlin, tucked up against a portion of the Wall so remote that nobody with means wanted to live there, or even go there.
In the 1960's, Kreuzberg became the centre of Turkish immigrant life in Berlin, and it still is. But in recent years, its exotic quality and relatively low rents have drawn a new population of the young and trendy to share space with strongly conservative, ethnic inhabitants.
The largest Turkish market in Berlin, which has many great outdoor markets, is in Kreuzberg, stretching for half a mile or so on the south side of the Landwehrkanal, which cuts east and west through the city.
There are numerous bars and clubs - many with music, gay and straight - on and around Bergmannstrasse and Mehringdamm, Gneisenaustrasse and Oranienstrasse. The building is 5 minutes away from Paul-Lincke-Ufer.
