The Location
Located south of Berlin-Mitte, Kreuzberg is one of the best-known districts of Berlin and famous for its nightlife. Kreuzberg is divided into 2 parts and in divided Germany it was in a very isolated position; with both eastern and western parts bordering onto the wall, and some areas almost surrounded by it. One Kreuzberg feature synonymous of its isolation and Berlin's division is Checkpoint Charlie, an East/West crossing checkpoint named by the allies.
There are upmarket areas such as Bergmann Kiez with a cosmopolitan crowd of students, young professionals and young couples. The streets have a distinct, almost oriental flair especially in the eastern part of the district, which is known as "Little Istanbul". On Tuesdays and Fridays one can experience the street market with its numerous vegetable and fruit stalls offering olives, goat's cheese, oranges and many more delights.
Kreuzberg streets like the Oranienstrabe are full of restaurants and bars, offering food from many places of the world. 19th century housing made some parts of the district more attractive as a residential area even for prosperous people: lawyers, doctors and small businesses. Today, Kreuzberg has one of the youngest populations of all European city districts.
